Night Fishing at the Delta

Jerbs called me up to go fishing after work and I was going to go but I changed my mind because he is annoying. Then Josh called me and then I decided to go.

The little fucker asked me for gas and I spit in his eye.

You know I am kidding Jerbs. Thanks for driving, that shit was fun.

California Delta is only an hour and a half away…

…and it is amazing. While fishing with my Dad today, I came to realize how lucky the Bay Arians are to live so close to such a great fishery.

My Dad and I ran a weekend trip at the Delta this weekend. Stayed in one of the RV’s at Sugar Barge.Very nice to wake up 100 yards from the water.

One thing that is great about using reaction baits for stripers is that you can catch largemouth too. delta_11_8_08.jpgThis 6 pound 11 oz fish popped my Lucky Craft 128 Jerk Bait in Franks Tract.

delta_11_8_08_2.jpgThis was a pretty large shad still in her belly. I think it was a shad. It must have been 6-7 inches long.

We spent Saturday night and Sunday day looking for some quatlity stripers and all we came up with was a bunch of shakers and the 14 pounder below. delta_11_9_08.jpg She blasted a pearl colored Lunker Punker Jr at first light Sunday morning.

Got to be to be pretty windy saturday night so the water was pretty stained Sunday. All in all, a great trip with Pops.

SanJoseBass.com Overhaul!!

I was looking at SJB the other day and was thinking, “My brother has a good thing going here…”. The site has great potential and was in need of a serious update. Well, I wrote him a new article for him talking about the Lunker Punker and amped him up to make a few changes.

san_jose_bass.jpg

Changes we made were:

  • Improved the home page
  • Eliminated the overload of forums and brought it down to only four topics
  • Updated the photo section
  • Organized the articles

These small changes made a huge difference.

If you have not been there, you should check it out. SanJoseBass.com is the address. You can post photos, join the forum, search for topics that may have your answers, read some of the articles, check some video, or hopefully get amped on purchasing some new gear.

Plus, I will now be a large contributor and hope to bring the nice proper Turd attitude to their site. Not the rude crude crappy dude I can be on this site. I’m not rude….am I? Well see you there, and don’t forget to keep coming back here to see pictures of me punching Jerb’s lights out.

California Delta, November 25th

Weather: Sunny Skies, not cold enough for fall.
Water Temp: 63.3 degrees
Water Clarity: Stained

delta_11_25_2008_3.jpgLook, Jerbs decided to wake up early for some Striper hunting! Good job fucker! MAS came too.

delta_11_25_2008.jpg Good to see Joser on the water again. He got more blow ups than I did the entire day but couldn’t capitalize. Landed one keeper on his Magnum Spook, 4.11, that was kept for food.

delta_11_25_2008_4.jpgPinche Joser almost crashed guay! Aye aye aye!

delta_11_25_2008_2.jpg11 Pound 4 Ounce Striper, landed on a Lunker Punker Jr. Caught & Released.

They are getting slightly bigger. Figured out that it may be a good idea to get some Boga-grips for the bigger fish. Very dangerous when they are slamming around in the net with those big ass hooks  exposed!!

Boby Barrack Striper Trip

Honestly, I get real frustrated out there during Striper season because sometimes I feel like I have no idea what the hell I am doing…maybe a guide like Bobby Barrack might be able to help. I never once that I would cough up the money for a fishing guide but hopefully Bobby can shed some light on the Striper season for me.

Punkering the Linesides…n’ pop’n em too!

lunker_punker.jpgI heard about the Lunker Punker a while back. I never really wanted to buy one for the Largies because of the price but once I knew the big Stripers loved em and since it is Striper season, I coughed up the 50 bucks and bought the Lunker Punker Jr. at Mel Cottons. I spooled up my Dobyns 736c with some 65 LB braid with a 20 pound mono leader and hit the Delta.

While sitting at my cubicle at work this past week, all I could do was vision this lure in action while fishing a tullie point in the early minutes of the morning. Of course, i was hoping to catch a big Striper on it too…

My Dad, Straps, and I hit the water before sunrise and found an early morning bite. First cast I hooked into a 5 to 7 pound Striper on a rat-l-trap but my dad blew it because he can’t see in the dark and accidentally got the net caught up in the lure without the fish in the net. Oh well, we saw it. We then decided to leave our first spot to look for some bigger fish, we then found a spot where they wanted the topwater lures and it was on. I must have farmed 6 BIG Stripers on the bait before I finally caught one because I was not waiting to feel the bite before setting the hook. I also noticed that when I sped up my retreive they would hit the bait harder and with more aggresion. One of the fish that blew up on my bait which I almost hooked had to be any where from 12-15 pounds. I did come away with one of his scales though.

While I was missing these fish and desperately trying to land one, my Dad had tied a fluorescent orange pencil_popper.jpgpencil popper to Strap’s pole. Well few casts later, a 7.5 pounder BREACHED on Josh’s bait! Completely launched out of the water. He was psyched. His first Striper on a topwater lure and new PB. We’re calling this bait The Buoy

They landed the fish and were busy trying to get the lure and the fish out of the net when I get nailed. This is definitely the largest Striper I have ever hooked into and the fish is on good, peeling drag. This fish is nice!  I look towards the back of the boat and there is no net ready! I have to end up fighting the fish longer than I would have liked which resulted in a bent out eye on my hook holders!?! Luckily the Striper was still hook on the other hooks. The net finally comes free and we land the 10 lb 7ounce Lineside…I accomplished my goal for the year, a ten plus on a topwater bait.

The tide was at the last hour of the incoming tide. The way I found these fish was that I looked for a flat near some deep water. Basically, an entrance into a sunken island next to the channel. We hit three spots with this characteristic until we found a school of hungry Stripers. We were catching them in only 4-6 feet of water and 10 yards from the flat was 25-30 feet of water. Find these spots early morning, I mean before the sun comes up early, and cast away. If you are not getting bit, find another spot like this until you find the school that wants your shit.

Cheers to the fellas at Black Dog Bait Company for making such a wonderful topwater bait!

Lunker Dogs, new craze in the south bay

Get your swimbait rod and a big ass treble hook. Then some 65 pound braid with a steel leader and a long ass gaff. End it off with a pack of Oscar Myer wieners and hook those babies up. You’re now ready for Dog Fishing! Check this 45 pounder we just landed. Thing was frisky and real smart. He would try to bite the line off but he wasn’t getting through the steel leader. Caught & Kept as a pet

Striper Season Approaches

Yep, the delta was packed this weekend. Live bait fisherman, pluggers, trollers…but the fish are here. Scattered, but here. I spoke to a few people and there was some talk of some big 10 plus fish being caught on live blue gill and assorted dead bait.  My dad talked to these guys that caught a 16 and and 18 on “live bait”…holy shit that would be fun.

Pops and I decided to fish two days this weekend. Did it all except for trolling. One thing I learned is that I do not know shit about fishing for stripers. Although, I am determined to learn. We did get a chance to try some live blue gill with no takers. Fishing with blue gill is like fishing with swim baits, you know when you get bit that it’ll be a good one, and this year will be the year I get one on a blue gill. Also, this will be the year I break the 10 pound mark on a topwater plug. (I hope)

marone_striper_10-5-08.jpg

Too make a long stroy short, caught a shit load of shakers on spoons the first day which was really fun, caught a shit load of shakers on the next day with anchovies (Pops loves bait fishing so this weekend was for him..), then finally caught a 7.2 pounder on a River 2 Sea bottom walker. Jesus christ did I need that. Hearing all these people talk about big fish can get a little discouraging when you are catching dinks all day. It was good to be with Pops though. The dude is fucking funny. Casting out a carolina rigged Fish Trap with an anchovie head used in place of the lead head!! He did catch one though which shut me up. Then I look over and he is using what he called a “schmorgeschborg”, a huge pile of sardines and shad all clumped up on a hook.

Till next weekend…

New Bassturdz site! Fall Bite and no new news!

So yeah, long time no post. What evs. I’ve been busy. Actually not too busy, just not fishing. Here’s breakdown of the summer:

  • My bro and his homie Kev got 4th in a Future Pro Tour Tounrment for his first tourney on the delta on May 10th
  • Jerbs and I didn’t even weigh in, I caught a fucking carp on my senko
  • My bro and I got 76th and Jerbs and Straps got 67th in a Clear Lake tourney back in June.  (Out of 144 boats)
  • Realized I am not into tourney fishing
  • Jacked my ankle skating
  • Re-vamped my other website (Maronesj.com)
  • Learned how to flip
  • Decided to get back out on the water and chill of the boozin’
  • Bassturdz website gets hacked! Fixed it though.
  • New sweet look for the site.
  • Still don’t like kooks.

That’s pretty much it. Stay tuned because you’ll be seeing some new shit on here more often.

Chunky 5.2 from Lobo

Oh, there is also a Video section on the left now. Hopefully we can continue to add to it. Here is something I filmed when I caught that fish on El Salto.
